Vale Don Wing

Patron of the Launceston Football Club from 2014-2024.

Thank you to past President Sandra Boland and Premiership Coach Mitch Thorp for these reflections of Don.

“A distinguished and true gentleman who volunteered his time and knowledge to our football community. A respected man always available with wisdom and kind and encouraging words when I’d reach out for his help and guidance.

Always a friendly smile and invaluable support during my time as President at LFC.

He will be truly missed. Love to all his family and loved ones.” Sandra Boland.

“Don was everything our Football Club needed from its Patron - curious, caring and deeply competitive.

Don and I developed a strong relationship over my time at LFC. I valued his regular phone calls, texts and the occasional Thursday night when Don would make an appearance to ensure everything was on track, keep an eye on the old blokes in the bar and see if any young person needed help with anything.

His interest in the community was sincere and a place for young people to feel connected was a priority.

Our players all knew Don as he’d never miss a home game or a big final, and whilst they didn’t all know the specifics of Don’s contribution to Launceston, they all knew he was a man of substance and that he cared about them and valued their contribution to LFC.

Don was a gentlemen.” Mitch Thorp.

Vale Bob Withers

We wore black armbands in our Grand Final matches last weekend in recognition of Launceston Team of the Century player and Premiership coach Bob Withers, who passed away last week.

A supremely skilled and highly versatile player, Bob was a star of the NTFA and interstate football throughout the 1960’s. During this time he also gained a reputation as one of northern Tasmania’s finest coaches, guiding us to a drought-breaking premiership in 1969.

Next Thursday 1 October 2026, we will be holding a Special General Meeting at the club to consider nominations for Life Membership and club awards.

Further information and nomination forms are available on our website: https://launcestonfc.com.au/special-general-meeting/
